Version 6.1
- UPDATE 2019-07-13:
- Updated GS Institute ASD to use Binary 385. Using mainly defaults by Boris as so far I like how they look. Only water might get tweaked later. Balance quality and performance. See notes in enbseries.ini for quality adjustments.
- The below tips apply to the current Institute ASD v6.1. If you want to use 385 with my other presets the tips also apply to them. In general they should all work (except the BOS preset which doesn't use ENB) with binary 385 if you do the following:
- -- EnableSkyAmbientCalculations = true for slightly brighter lighting from the sky and perhaps a better look (subjective)
- -- Under SSAO if you want a better quality SSAO enable UseComplexAmbientOcclusion and UseSelfIntersecting
- -- Disable CloudShadows
- -- under SHADOW set to -1 for ultra quality or at 2 for low quality. Note detailed shadows can sometimes create a blocky shadow effect on characters. Disable the effect if this bothers you (it seems a bit random at times how it looks).
- -- for WATER quality ranges from 0 (best) to 2 (low). Same for Reflections. I recommend enabling both.
Version 6.0
- UPDATE 2018-01-17:
- Added a BETA version (i.e. as is) of Institute ASD Enhanced. It is a bit softer in look because of slightly stronger bloom settings and new bloom code. Institute interiors are hit or miss with it (I know the elevator is white out). The DOF is by Marty McFly with my own settings. I love this DOF and recommend trying it with some of the other presets. You do have to get used to the controls - but it has a nice GUI and just fooling around with it in-game gives the basics on how things work. Also new adaption and lens shaders but they are not enabled at the moment. Not sure when I will get inspired to sink another large chunk of time into it so figured I would just share what I have for now. - Update for GS Institute ASD version 6.1:
- - Updated to use Binary 384. Using mainly defaults by Boris as so far I like how they look. Only water might get tweaked later.
- - Balance quality and performance. See notes in enbseries.ini for quality adjustments
- - Tips for ENBSERIES.INI changes:
- -- EnableSkyAmbientCalculations = true for slightly brighter lighting from the sky and perhaps a better look (subjective)
- -- Under SSAO if you want a better quality SSAO enable UseComplexAmbientOcclusion and UseSelfIntersecting
- -- Keep Cloud Shadows disabled
- -- under SHADOW set to -1 for ultra quality or at 2 for low quality
- -- for WATER quality ranges from 0 (best) to 2 (low). Same for Reflections.

Version 5.8
- UPDATE 2018-01-01:
- Updated all presets that use ENB to version 5.8 with Sky Ambient Calculation set to off. It tends to be very bright and I prefer the darker shadows. Users are welcome to toggle it on or off in the GUI to meet their own taste. I left detailed shadows on. Even though it can sometimes make character faces dark, or blocky shadows, the overall added effect is very cool.
- UPDATE 2018-01-01:
Version 5.7
- UPDATE 2017-12-27:
- I updated all the ENB based presets to ENB binary 323. In the process I did some cleaning and minor tweaks. All presets are now set to UlTRA by default. I updated the front page with performance suggestions. I also often have notes added to the enbseries.ini that offer tips. ENB DOF should be off by default (toggle with SHIFT + F7) and ReShade on by default (toggle with MINUS key on NUMPAD).
- Added a new preset called Railroad Enhanced (RRE) which runs on ReShade v3.X. This was made by SymphonicJohn (who made the original Railroad) and I have updated it to binary 323 and hosting it here.
- You will notice that in exteriors ASD, RR, RRE, LW, and PACK will all be brighter as I enabled EnableSkyAmbientCalculation which increases lighting. You can toggle it off and on with the ENB GUI under effects depending on your taste. I also enabled the detailed shadows which I recommend keeping at ultra quality. Cloud Shadows and Sky Lighting both cause problems and I suggest not enabling them.
- BOS and Minuteman, both ReShade only, have not been touched. I don't use either right now so they are pretty much stuck 'as is'.
- UPDATE 2017-12-27:
Version 5.5
- UPDATE 2017-03-21:
- Uploaded a new preset called 'The Pack' named after the raider faction in Nuka World (I choose the name as that faction is vibrant, animalistic, colorful, and fits the look IMO). This preset was originally made by IheartRunningman as a ReShade preset. His goal was to recreate the look of the Grim and Somber presets based on the originals by Tansarville and later tweaked by me. I added the ENB files, and my own ENB code, plus some minor tweaks to the ReShade settings. He then granted me permission to upload this altered version here. Be sure to check out his other presets for FO4 on Nexus - he does amazing stuff!
- For more images of what The Pack looks like check out my Pack Flicker Album.
- I also got of my ass and finally renamed Grimwolf Alone to something fitting my overall theme of using in-game lore for all my preset names. I still wanted to keep that 'Alone' feeling created by the original author (archidan85) so I went with Lone Wanderer (who is really their own faction and also references the FO4 perk).
- UPDATE 2017-03-21:
Version 5.0
- UPDATE 2017-02-06:
- Thanks very much to SymphonicJohn for granting me permission to use his old FO4 preset (which I have been calling Symphonic) as the main base for a new preset I have uploaded tonight - The Grim Wolf Railroad. The majority of the code for this was done by SymphonicJohn so kudos and credit for this great looking vintage preset go to him. I have updated it to binary 311, added my own SSAO and DOF settings, made minor changes to bloom and enbseries.ini values, added some code from JawZ awesome Modular Shader Library for some added effects and GUI control, and a couple other minor tweaks here and there.
- This preset is an old-world rustic vintage and cinematic preset that is heavily desaturated with a lot of grain (which is essential to the preset). The bloom is strong in places with a lot of bright lights but its the cost for having the soft rustic feel to the light. It has moderate SSAO settings and for FPS I get 45-58 for interiors and around 30-45 for exteriors which I find very acceptable so I won't be optimizing it any further.
- UPDATE 2017-02-06:
Version 4.6.1
- UPDATE 2017-01-26:
- Small update to Alone preset as I had the wrong flags set on DOF and Lensflare in the optional DOF download.
- Boris updated Skyrim ENB without version change today: 'Updated ENBSeries 0.311 for Fallout 4. Added support of loading multiple plugins (.dllplugin extention) from 'enbseries' folder.'
- UPDATE 2017-01-26:
Version 4.6
- - Updated GW Alone and GW INST ASD to version 4.6. Boris made a code fix to binary 311 (no version change on binary) that affected one of the files I use. It was also an excuse to motivate me to add in some personal tweaks I have made to both presets since the last update. Nothing big though - super minor stuff. But as of today everything is nice and current at least.
Version 4.5
- UPDATE 2016-10-07:
- Quick update as I discovered I had kept my own testing ReShade DOF settings for the default main install for both ASD and ALONE when I uploaded last night with the SSAO changes. So 4.5 just sets the ReShade DOF back to the nice soft distance blur that tends to work best with these presets if using it while playing. Apologies on that!
- UPDATE 2016-10-07:
Version 4.4
- UPDATE 2016-10-07:
- With the silent update Boris made to binary 307 I wanted to adjust the SSAO settings somewhat. I did this for both Grim Wolf Alone and Grimwolf Institute ASD. I have SSAO off by default in both presets but you can enable it easily by setting EnableSSAO=true to true from false. Note you should do this BEFORE starting the game. If you do it in-game be sure to then click the SAVE and then APPLY CHANGES in the GUI to be sure the full effect takes place. I set it to off by default as for my setup ENB SSAO costs 10-12 FPS. While I can deal with that (since I still get 30-45 FPS) I know I would get nothing but complaints over it so saving myself a headache by leaving it off by default.
- In addition I adjusted grain values (off by default), gamma, contrast, and brightness. All very small subtle changes though.
- Added a new 'Very High Quality' version in the download. Same code just the SSAO is set to ultra like settings. Expect a decent FPS hit.
- All of the above is pretty subtle so don't expect some big change or overhaul. I happen to like both of these presets very much 'as is' so my tweaking tends to be more subtle to just keep it up to date with binary changes and small things I find in-game that I think look better. As I play I carry the best changes over to the nexus version of the presets for uploading down the road.
- Only thing on my to do list is to finish setting some of the environmental values but haven't been in a rush as waiting to see if Boris will add weathers or other features and overall happy with the look.
- UPDATE 2016-10-07:
Version 4.3
- - Updated Grimwolf Alone and Grimwolf Institute ASD presets to version 4.3. Just some minor tweaks to fine-tune the SSAO-SSIL settings (which are now off by default), bloom, grain, DOF values, and brightness/contrast.
- After a month of fiddling with ENB SSAO-SSIL settings, and comparing them to the game SAO and HBAO values, I reached the conclusion that the game SAO/HBAO actually looks just as good. The ENB version can cost up to 20 FPS (depending on your quality settings, scale size, and range) and what it adds wasn't worth the cost since SAO and HBAO is cheaper. I spent hours comparing things and differences really came down to taste. Plus these presets are very high contrast which tends to make the ENB values too intense unless you keep them weak which defeats some of the purpose. I think all three look best but isn't worth the cost. I still tweak the values, however, as I do enable it sometimes for screenshots. I also found that even though you can edit the values live it is better to edit, save, apply changes to see the most accurate results.
- On SAO/HBAO: In the downloads I included a note with my SAO and HBAO settings. Mainly because I tweak my presets around those settings and if anyone is curious to know what they are I wanted to share them.
- - Updated Grimwolf Alone and Grimwolf Institute ASD presets to version 4.3. Just some minor tweaks to fine-tune the SSAO-SSIL settings (which are now off by default), bloom, grain, DOF values, and brightness/contrast.
Version 4.2
- UPDATE 2016-07-30:
- Added a new preset to the mix called 'Grim Wolf Alone' which is a special cinematic preset based on the ReShade preset Alone by archidan85 merged with my own Institute ASD preset. Other than the DOF, and a few minor tweaks in the SweetFX CFG code file, the ReShade code was all done by archidan85 who was kind enough to grant me permission to use his code. I then took all my own ENB code from ASD and added it to Alone, with adjustments to handle the darker values in Alone. This preset is very dark and comes with grain and letterboxes enabled as it is meant to be more cinematic. It has a subtle antique vintage green tint to it that really comes out at night and during rad-storms. See the front page for help on enabling/disabling DOF, grain, and letterboxes.
- UPDATE 2016-07-30:
Version 4.1
- UPDATE 2016-06-07:
- Quick patch for ASD to 4.1 for a bad IL value (thanks Anataron) that crept in during testing. I expect there will be some tweaking and patches since I am using a lot of new features.
- UPDATE 2016-06-07:
Version 4.0
- UPDATE 2016-06-07:
- Did a lot of house cleaning today on the Nexus page and files today. Please read these notes carefully for version 4.0
- Updated Institute ASD to version 4.0 using ENB Binary 307 with SSAO enabled (see the enbseries.ini for comments on performance settings). Tweaked bloom, environmental, effects, and post-process settings. Included ENB DoF as the default DOF for the preset (and added an options folder so people can switch between ENB DOF and ReShade DOF depending on their preference). Many thanks to Wolrajh who added the X, Y focus GUI controls to the ENB DOF code file. I recommend using both the game HBAO and the ENB SSAO as they compliment each other nicely and that was how I tweaked it. Included with the preset is a help guide for using grain, letterbox, and ENB DOF.
- Changed how I packaged the files. Since ReShade 1.1 is going away, and I have no desire to use 2.0, I am now including in the presets all the ReShade 1.1 files needed to run the presets. There is no need to download anything from the ReShade website to run these presets. You will, however, still need to download the ENB Binary files (the two DLL ones) from enbdev.com if the preset requires them. Consequently I edited and re-uploaded the BOS and MM files. I also reduced the bloom FPS cost (lowered quality for bloom from 9 to 4) in both the BOS and MM and made a couple very minor tweaks. The BOS and MM ones are pretty much plug-n-play to use - just copy the contents into steams Fallout 4 folder. The Institute preset also requires the two ENB binary dll files from Boris - just copy those two files, along with the rest of the preset files, into steams Fallout 4 directory and you are good to go.
- Deleted the ASD Bright version. It was very old and out of date. Also deleted the BETA Institute ASD ReShade 2.0 preset. I very much dislike ReShade 2.0 and they are already working on version 3.0 (which will work very different) so I see no need to invest any time in supporting a 2.0 version. I will remain on 1.1 until 3.0 is released ... and will re-evaluate then.
- Restored MM and BOS as main files. BOS is very popular and I would like to still work on MM at some point, so felt they should all be considered main files. JoPineapple also has a new preset so I removed his Railroad version. You can find his new one on his Flickr account (takes some digging though).
- Updated the front page to reflect all the changes.
- Sample shot of ENB SSAO OFF and ENB SSAO ON
- Need Help with ENB GUI? Use SHIFT + SPACE to open in-game. See this Help Image for where to find DOF, Grain, and Letterbox effects for tweaking.
- UPDATE 2016-06-07:
Version 2.4
- UPDATE 2016-02-02:
- With the official patch released I have removed support for ReShade HBAO. I recommend using the new game version of HBAO (Ultra). I suggest setting the power to 2.75 for use with the ASD preset (entirely optional though - its purely a matter of taste). To do this open the Fallout4Prefs.ini file and under the [NVHBAO] section set fPowerExponent=2.7500.
- Updated the Institute ASD preset to version 2.4. I removed ReShade HBAO, made the default DOF more subtle and playable (it is the setting I use for myself), tweaked the bloom settings, adjusted the darkness and brightness ratio to be a tad more balanced, and added a couple of sky settings I had worked on. Basically its the preset I use myself right now.
- Added an options folder to the ASD preset. Just has a screenshot configured version of DOF and the ENB file to enable grain and letterbox bars (for those who don't want to do it in the GUI).
- Moved all the other preset to the miscellaneous section. I only plan on supporting the ASD preset at this point. It has the same FPS as the BOS preset (depending on whether DOF is enabled or not) so no reason for a performance version anymore. There are plenty of vintage presets much better than mine on Nexus, including JoPineapples, so I am not inspired to work on my own version at this point.
- Per request I have uploaded my current FO4 INI files under the options section. They are in PDF format as they are meant to be used as reference only for those curious what my settings are. They reflect the current patch released as of 2016-02-02 with HBAO.
- UPDATE 2016-02-02:
Version 2.3.1
- - Apologies everyone but I had uploaded the wrong file for the ASD Bright. It was one of the testing versions. I just noticed it and uploaded the correct one. If you downloaded before I added this correction comment please re-download. I made it version 2.3.1 to distinguish it from the wrong 2.3 file I had uploaded.
UPDATE 2016-1-19:
- A new preset was uploaded. It is the Institute ASD Bright v2.3. This is based on the regular ASD preset with some key changes. I tweak on a 2560x1440 monitor and I have found that on some 1920x1080 monitors the ASD can be much darker in appearence (likewise reduced screenshots can also seem much darker). This 'ASD Bright' version is for those people who want to have an overall brighter look, especially at night and interiors. It won't be too bright, as these presets depend on high contrast and gamma settings, but it should be a decent compromise I hope. Since I tweaked this using the beta patch 1.3 I disabled ReShade HBAO as that is now supplied by Bethesda in the patch (code is there still so folks can re-enable if they like; directions on front page). To balance out some of the color washing from the increased brightness I have used ENB CC to increase saturation levels (which also adds back some contrast) so this version is a tad more vibrant as well. Bloom is also stronger (I love how it looks now). Lastly I started to tweak some ENB sky settings so I included those in this preset as well (got a lot more to do on this though). Performance is better with this version since no HBAO.
- I updated the regular ASD to 2.3 with very minor changes in preparation of patch 1.3. I also disabled the effect messages on screen as most feedback I got from people indicated they disliked the messages showing each time they toggled an effect. It only shows when the game first loads now. Bloom values for ASD and ASD Bright were also tweaked. Not sure what the inside of the Interior looks like - will probably need to work on that again at some point.

Version 2.2
- UPDATE 2016-1-1:
- Updated The Institute ASD to version 2.2 using Binary 291. This has new bloom code to deal with the funky lighting inside the Institute. It won't be perfect and there is some banding in places and some overly bright bloom but it is way better than before. This location is classified by ENB as BOTH interior and exterior day so instead of using one or the other for bloom amounts it combines both of them. Either ENB or changes made with GECK are probably needed to deal with this. Will continue to watch development of bloom and ENB and will update if needed. Also feel free to just disable bloom entirely (just open the ENB GUI and check the box that says UseOriginalBloom to set it to true - it will override everything else and just use vanilla game bloom) while inside the Institute. This is a case where the vanilla bloom looks much better.
- Made some tweaks to lighting and color. Personally I am very pleased with how it looks right now. Next steps will be to work on some specific sky settings now enabled in enbseries.ini plus looking around for a good ENB based DOF shader.
- UPDATE 2016-1-1:
Version 2.1
- Updated 2015-31-1
- This is a short term (temporary) update to revert back to ReShade bloom while I search for a fix for bloom in the Institute.
- Updated 2015-31-1
Version 2.0
- UPDATE 2015-12-30:
- Released a new BETA preset: The Institute Advanced System Design (ASD) that uses ReShade and ENB (v0.291). This is a BETA version and still a work in progress. The old version of the Institute has been archived. I have moved bloom, grain, and various color corrections and tweaks over to ENB. All of those changes can be tweaked using the in-game ENB GUI (activate using SHIFT + CONTROL). It also comes with letterbox (black bars at top and bottom) which is editible with the ENB GUI.
- The Institute ASD download includes a detailed readme file with instructions for installing it (as it requires ReShade and ENB to use).
- Three sample shots under the images section (at end).
- I also changed the category of this page to the Nexus ENB category now that it actually uses ENB. Time permitting I will be migrating the other presets over to ENB as well (either combined with ReShade or all ENB depending on how it looks the time I have available).
- Front page and various other page information has been updated to reflect the addition of ENB, including new permissions and credits.
- UPDATE 2015-12-30:
Version 1.3.Jo
- Jo made a fix to the file so I uploaded the patched version as 1.3.Jo.
Version 1.2.Jo
- Updated file for JoPineapple's vintage/cinematic Railroad ReShade preset with various tweaks. See the readme in the download for details and instructions.
Version 1.2.1
- Brotherhood of Steel did not have the 'show message when effects enabled or disabled' turned on. I like to enable these messages for all presets as it helps users (and myself) see if effects are actually enabled or not. Anyhow this small update set the messages to ON by default. This only applies to the BOS preset.
Version 1.2
- Enabled debanding to combat some of the sky banding.
Version 1.1.Jo
- Special guest preset created by JoPineapple that I am hosting for him. Any changes/updates to his preset will end in .Jo to differentiate them from my own updates. This preset has a strong vintage vibe to it and has HBAO and DOF enabled by default. The readme file that comes with his download explains how to disable those effects if needed.
Version 1.1
- Updated all three presets to just have core CFG files and final tweaks.
Version 1.0
